Hand embroidered silk thread on hand-loomed orange khaddar. This is an old piece, with obvious signs of use & small areas of patching. Northern India. Spectacular Phulkari shawls formed an important part of the dowry of a new bride & were started early in a girl's life. Women & girls gathered to embroider as they sang & learned the traditional motifs from their elders. Two or three pieces were then assembled to create a shawl. This important social tradition of common work is called trinjhan.
