Written in old Mandarin, the translation is as follows: Xiang Wei (artist's name), Fujian Provence, in the winter of the 20th year of the reign of Emperor Tong Tze (1881). The four main characters read "Respect for Oneself, Harmony, Kindness, Respect for Your Elders". Chinese scented fir (shan mu). A very special piece given that it is signed and precisely dated.
