Demon mask, Gurung or Magar, Middle Hills, Nepal. Early 20th century or older, showing considerable usage. Hardwood with handbeaten iron detailing, including metal-shod teeth, two nose brackets and a figure of a leaping man with arms outstretched on the forehead. Goat hair eyebrows, mustache and beard complete the decoration. Traces of white clay patina over the entire mask gives it a grey appearance. Represents a demon called Rakshasas.
